Despite the already known challenges that the industry currently faces, a new one has emerged. scandal seems to be looming on the Hollywood horizon.
A recent study conducted Vulture, investigated the vulnerability of the portal Rotten Tomatoes, a world-renowned review aggregator whose data is often highly respected. The initiative revealed that the portal has important shortcomings that could lead to real handling skills some data.
An event that seems to have actually materialized with Ophelia2018 film directed by Claire McCarthy, starring Daisy Ridley. The film reportedly received positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes after the film’s promotion company Bunker 15 paid a certain amount of money.
As it turns out, the company would actually pay about $50 for each person. positive feedbacktargeting the most vulnerable segment of Rotten Tomatoes-affiliated film critics, and fishing among those with the lowest credibility and the most financial hardship.
The ultimate goal of this manipulation was to gather enough positive reviews to make the Daisy Ridley movie more interesting. nice in the eyes of potential international distributors. Bunker 15 will also ensure that negative reviews are excluded from the final settlement.
Either way, the plan seems to have worked. successfulWith Ophelia which was certified “fresh” by Rotten Tomatoes and was subsequently acquired by IFC Films for distribution in the United States.
In response to the investigation that uncovered the scandal, Bunker 15 founder Daniel Harlow categorically denied that company responsibility loading them one by one onto other items:
We have thousands of critics on our mailing list. Several of them created specific system whereby directors can sponsor or pay to get a good review.
The famous director also spoke about this Paul Schroederwho also has a past critic on his side:
Studios didn’t invent Rotten Tomatoes, and most of them don’t like it. But the system is corrupt. The public is dumber. Normal people don’t go read reviews like they used to. Studios can play with Rotten Tomatoes, and they do.
