The film, shortlisted for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, is inspired by the novel of the same name by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and, in particular, by the theatrical adaptation of the novel of the same name by David Ives, the film’s co-author. . The film is based on the novel From Real Life by Delphine de Wigan.
