Houston, mission failed. On July 22, 1962, the Mariner 1 probe was launched from Cape Canaveral. Objective: Venus. Luckily no one was on the plane. The rocket immediately began behaving strangely, straying from its course and ignoring commands coming from the ground. After a few minutes, to prevent it from falling on any populated area, a self-destruct command was sent and executed. The problem was caused by a minor error in the programming of the control systems (a dash was ignored in an equation). Author Arthur C. Clarke, in his book promise of space, it was dubbed “the most expensive dash in history”: the mission cost $18.5 million. The Soyuz TM-3 mission, the third manned Soviet mission to visit the Mir space station, went much better.
