Strays has received a new trailer showcasing even more brutal dog adventures. Directed by Josh Greenbaum, the film follows a group of street-dwelling talking dogs who team up with the recently abandoned Reggie (Will Ferrell) to take brutal revenge on their former owner, Doug (Will Forte). The film’s stellar cast also includes Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher, Randall Park, Harvey Guillen, Josh Gad, Sofia Vergara and Dennis Quaid.
Universal Pictures has unveiled a new trailer for the film ahead of the Straces’ official release date of August 18.
While this new video features scenes from the original trailer, such as dogs drinking beer and eating mushrooms, there are tons of new footage in between. These include a lot of rude jokes from Jamie Foxx as Bug and other characters, as well as a tender moment with an abandoned couch.
“Strize” could prove to be the decisive R-rated comedy series in 2023.
Summer 2023 has been a renaissance of sorts for R-rated comedies backed by major studios. It all started with the June 23 release of No Hard Feelings, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Bart Feldman. No Hard Feelings was a huge box office success, grossing $82.6 million worldwide, and also received a positive critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes with an overall approval rating of 70 percent.
The July 7 release of No Hard Feelings was followed by the comedy Joy Ride, starring Ashley Park. This film received even higher praise from critics, earning a 91 percent approval rating. However, box office performance has not been as good, with the film ranking sixth at the time of writing and grossing only $12.9 million.
Strais has yet to prove once again that an R-rated 2023 comedy can be both a critical and commercial success. If he manages to fix this catchphrase, it could mean very good news for the future of irreverent studio films. While releasing three such films in the same season is relatively rare in the modern era, their success could mean even more studio blockbusters will be made in the coming years.
