The Junta of Castile and León, through the Ministry of Health, has started a vaccination campaign against influenza and Covid-19 in León for people in shelter institutions and, from October 10, it will also be launched for the general population in this group. People carry out vaccination activities. Vaccination is recommended.
During the 2023-2024 vaccination campaign, the Ministry of Health has purchased 805,500 doses of influenza vaccine, of which 140,880 doses are destined for the province (42,200 doses are destined for Elbieso) and will be delivered gradually. Total regional expenditure was €10,527,058, including a new intranasal vaccine for children aged 24 to 59 months. During the last vaccination campaign, the total number of people immunized in Leon was 127,727, or 28.25% of the total population.
Eduardo Diego, the Commission’s representative in the León region, visited the Armunia mixed senior residence to witness the start of vaccination. He said: “I encourage all Leonians to participate in this campaign for two reasons: Protecting yourself against the flu not only helps yourself, but also helps others, so that together we can lessen the impact of the fall and winter flu. “.
Regarding the flu, the campaign will target those who are at higher risk of developing complications from the flu, as well as those who may be at higher risk of transmitting the flu to other complications. The aim of Covid-19 vaccination is to increase the protection of the most vulnerable people and health and social care staff, in order to reduce morbidity and mortality and the impact of the disease on care capacity.
Influenza and Covid-19 vaccinations are recommended for: People aged 60 or over; People aged 5 or over in disability centers and nursing homes; People under 60 with risk conditions; Pregnant women in any trimester of pregnancy and during the postpartum period Women (within 6 months postpartum) who were not vaccinated during pregnancy; People living with people who are highly immunosuppressed; Workers in public and private health and social care centers; and People working in essential public services Personnel such as national security forces and corps, firefighters or civil protection services, etc.
In addition to the above, influenza vaccination is recommended for the following groups: Children aged 6 to 59 months. This is a novelty in the immunization calendar of Castilla and León. The vaccine will be given intramuscularly for children 6 to 23 months and intranasally for children 24 to 59 months; Education center staff at any education level; People 5 to 59 years old are at higher risk for complications from influenza. This group includes smokers; students doing internships at health and social care centers; people who work on farms, poultry farms, pig farms or mink farms or who come into contact with wild animals.
For those accommodated in residences, their vaccination will be carried out by health professionals from each health district of Castile and León, who will visit these institutions to receive both vaccines. Their presence will be used to vaccinate the professionals working there.
Health and social hygiene staff will be able to receive both vaccines in the workplace by referring to occupational health services. For the remaining groups 60 and older and those under 60 with risk factors, each health district determines where vaccinations are available and how to make appointments based on social, demographic and health status, among other things.
