Billie Eilish said during a talk show appearance on Tuesday that her 2019 hit Bad Guy was the “dumbest song in the world.”
The 21-year-old singer, while appearing with her brother Finneas O’Connell, 26, on Jimmy Kimmel Live, was asked by Jimmy, 55, if they were strict with themselves regarding lyrics and past songs.
“Yes, of course,” said Billie, who wore an all-black outfit and added a pop of color with red hair on top of her head.
Jimmy asked if there was any song that made them feel uncomfortable or, as Billie put it, “cringe a little.”
“Well, objectively, Bad Guy is the dumbest song in the world,” Billie said, referring to her 2019 single, which topped the charts and won Record and Song of the Year at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. .
“But it’s really good. Oh my god, don’t gasp,” Billie added as the audience reacted to her remark.
“But it’s like you should understand.” There must be humor in this. Like, I’m trolling this song. This song is supposed to be stupid, but it’s funny because it’s stupid,” Billie said as the audience chuckled.
“It’s literally like, ‘Yes.’ What does this mean?,” Billie said.
“Look, it works,” Jimmy said, noting that when the “Bad Guy” shows up in his house, his kids are “just waiting” for the “Yes” part to show up.
“They love the spirit,” Jimmy said.
“Well, it definitely works,” Billie said.
Billie went on to say that both Finneas and herself “disagree” with artists who hate their music.
“It really upsets me. Like, why are you doing this then?’” Billie said.
Billie added that they are both fans of what they do and that she loves her music, even though it can still make her cringe.
Jimmy later noted that their new song What Was I Made For? The Barbie movie soundtrack has been streamed 600 million times.
“Have you guys ever thought about the numbers and how staggering it is?” – Jimmy asked.
“Pretty crazy. That’s a lot of listeners,” said Billie, who recently opened up about her struggles with fame.
Jimmy asked how they write a song that someone asked them to do.
Billie said she and Finneas “thrive” in such conditions.
She admitted that it is difficult for her to sit and write about how she feels from just her point of view, and she likes to be prompted.
Finneas said they have been recording for the past year while creating music.
They shared a clip of “What Was I Made For?” was made in which Billy sings on a couch while Finneas provides the music and sings lines off-screen.
Billie said they had been recording for six hours and she was about to walk out the door when Finneas asked her to try again.
According to Billy, Finneas immediately started playing strings and they quickly came up with some key lyrics.
“We wrote almost the entire song, except for the last verse, in about an hour or two that night,” Billie said. “It was really cool.”
