Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 16 more years

The producer was sentenced by the Los Angeles court to another 16 years in prison for multiple and repeated sexual abuse. The sentence is added to the 23 years already to be served

The 16 years add up to the previous 23 to be served for Harvey Weinstein, the producer accused and convicted of harassment by multiple victims, who over the years have finally obtained justice. Weinstein has become a pivotal case in the #MeToo movement, which. born in 2017. was chosen by the Time as person of the year. The movement fights against the abuses of men in positions of power. Among the stars who originally launched the first allegations are Salma Hayek, Asia Argento, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Uma Thurman.

The manufacturer’s inappropriate behaviors went on for over three decades. The trial during these years of investigation was held between New York and Los Angeles. Weinstein’s line of defense has always been ambiguous, with attempts to overturn the accusations against the victims. One of the lawyers, Mark Werksman defended his client by stating that “these women agreed to have sex with him and now they lie because they are ashamed. Look at my client, it’s not Brad Pitt or George Clooney. Do you think these beautiful women had sex with him because he’s hot? No, because it’s powerful.”

On February 23, Judge Lisa Lench, of the Los Angeles court, decreed a further 16-year sentence for Harvey Weinstein, after the sentence already received by the New York State Supreme Court in 2020. In any case, it is reduced sentence compared to the 24 years requested by the prosecution. According to the defence, however, the years to be served should have been three for each charge (rape, forced oral sex and penetration with foreign objects).

After this further sentence it is clear that the producer is destined to spend the rest of his life in prison. “We are happy that justice has been done done”. This is the comment of Luoisette Geiss and Caitlin Dulany after the verdict of the judge Lench.
