In an interview with The Independent, Adam Brody got to reflect on the flop of Jennifer’s Body.
The horror film, which was released in 2009 and proved to be an initial failure with audiences and critics, sees Megan Fox as a popular high school cheerleader who becomes possessed by a demon and begins killing her male classmates. According to the actor, who plays Nikolai, a member of the rock band Low Shoulder, this result is due to the marketing strategies adopted, which aimed at a male target. Here are his words:
It could not have been more wrong (the marketing). What I remember I liked the most was the palette. I liked it a lot. It’s neon, but it’s gothic, and then marketing has distorted it. So it is Goosebumps (Goosebumps) And Maxim (magazine for a male audience). I don’t understand what we are doing. Jennifer’s Body it’s about, among other things, the sisterhood that’s corroded and you don’t have both girlfriends on the poster. It’s just her (Jennifer) in nothing that she’s wearing in the movie. I thought there are such beautiful images in the film, I can’t believe you’re not using them. This is a marketer’s dream and it seems to me that you are hiding it.
The film was directed by a woman (Karyn Kusama), starred by two women (Fox and Amanda Seyfried), written by that year’s screenplay Oscar winner (Diablo Cody, awarded for Juno). And instead you decide: “We hide all this. Don’t tell anyone. It’s irrelevant that Diablo Cody just won an Oscar and wrote this. We don’t want anyone to know. This is for people who like Transformers (film that Fox blew up in, released two years earlier)“. And I don’t know how much it would have changed if it had more modern marketing. Probably a little.
