LeBron James and Kevin Durant nearly scored on day two of the NBA’s in-season tournament, and the Los Angeles Lakers came back to win 122-119 in a battle between two future Hall of Famers.
The Lakers, who lost their third straight game on Friday, responded by trading Austin Reaves, who just paid $56 million, for Cam Reddish. The Phoenix Suns are still without Devin Booker, but that didn’t look like a big issue for much of the night.
The Suns led by 10 points late in the third quarter, but the Lakers eventually led the Suns 33-23 in the fourth quarter. James scored 32 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists, and Durant scored 38 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.
Elsewhere in the West, the Los Angeles Clippers are 0-3, their worst loss since James Harden joined the team.
Facing the Dallas Mavericks, the Clippers took a double-digit lead late in the first quarter and then, well, couldn’t stop the Mavericks from putting the ball in the basket. Less than two minutes into the second quarter, the Mavericks took the lead. Four minutes later, they led by 19 points. At halftime, they led by 26 points.
The Mavericks’ lead reached as high as 32 points. Luka Doncic scored 44 points on 17-of-21 shooting to provide momentum for a big night.
Unsurprisingly, a team starting Harden and Russell Westbrook had problems keeping Dallas ahead. The Clippers could only hope the team could hold it together with Harden on the team for more than a week, but concerns about his health were growing at the time of the trade.
Earlier, the Minnesota Timberwolves won the battle over France’s 7-footer, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying from Victor Wembanyama.
The Timberwolves defeated the San Antonio Spurs 117-110 on the second day of the new NBA tournament, which includes both the regular season and the group stage that will determine the eight-team roster for December’s knockout rounds.
Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards combined for 57 points in the win, Minnesota’s fifth straight, while Wembunama had the most efficient game of his young career In the game, he scored 29 points on 12-of-21 shooting (3-of-7 from 3). – scoring range), 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks.
It was a meaningful night for Wembanyama because he faced his countrymen,”proud dad“Rudy Gobert.
