Considering there were eight performers involved, winning the SAG Awards for two different limited series or TV movies isn’t as rare as it used to be. However, this remains an impressive achievement as no one has yet surpassed it, but that could change within a few months. Heading into the 30th SAG Awards, the two-time Best Actor in a TV Movie/Limited Series winner Mark Ruffalo he has a chance to win another trophy, making him the first three-time champion in any non-continuing category.
Ruffalo’s first two individual awards came for his work in HBO’s The Normal Heart (2015) and I Know This Much Is True (2021). Here, he’s seeking recognition as the star of Netflix’s four-part adaptation of the widely praised novel All the Light We Cannot See, in which he appears as a French mechanic and single father surviving the German occupation of his country. This potential SAG Awards run will differ from the previous two in that its new series is eligible for next year’s Primetime Emmy, whereas it entered the 2015 and 2021 races as a nominee for that season’s Emmy.
Ruffalo is the second-highest (and last male) addition to the double SAG Award-winning club, having gained entry the year before. Kate Winslet (“Mildred Pierce,” 2012; “Easttown Mare,” 2022). The three men who preceded him were Gary Sinise (“Truman”, 1996; “George Wallace”, 1998), Al Pacino (“Angels in America”, 2004; “You Don’t Know Jack”, 2011) and Paul Giamatti (John Adams, 2009; Too Big to Fail, 2012), and the first three female members were Alfre Woodard (“The Piano Lesson”, 1996; “Miss Evers’ Boys”, 1998), Helen Mirren (“Elizabeth I”, 2007; “Phil Spector”, 2014) and Queen Latifah (“Life Support”, 2008; “Bessie”, 2016).
As an actor in Poor Boy, Ruffalo is also currently in line to earn his third Best Supporting Actor nomination in a film, following his first two for The Kids Are All Right (2011) and Foxcatcher (2015). Having already performed individually as a film and television actor in 2015, he can now easily set the SAG Awards record as the first person to do so twice. If we take into account actresses, then in this respect it is preceded Judi Dench (2001 and 2002), Julianne Moore (2000 and 2003) and Mirren (2007 and 2016).
Current odds for the SAG Awards Gold Derby indicate Ruffalo is a doubly safe bet, as evidenced by his third- and fourth-place performances in said races on TV and in movies. It’s understandable that his third and first place finishes in the Gold Derby rankings before his initial small screen wins were influenced by his previous Emmy wins, but this is a very different situation. However, the fact that he will have to fend off no past Emmy nominees, and probably only one current one (Steven Yeun“Beef” gives him a good chance of making SAG Awards history.
