The publication noted that Halle Berry was approached for the role, but she reportedly turned down the offer, after which Bullock got the job.

Graham Yost, who wrote scripts for films directed by Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. Speedit was revealed that Bullock’s character Annie Porter was originally written as “African-American Paramedic.” On the occasion of the film’s 20th anniversary, the award-winning writer told Entertainment Weekly:
“There was one version that she was a driving teacher, yes. In the first version she was an African-American woman and a paramedic – I wanted to explain why she was so good at driving at high speeds in traffic. You come up with these rationales for the character and start peeling away from them. First of all, it’s comfortable, and even the driver’s thing was also kind of comfortable, so it just became human. One of the ironies was that after we did this particular character, the first person we approached was Halle Berry, and she wasn’t interested.”
The action-thriller, directed by Jan de Bont, had a star-studded cast that included Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, Sandra Bullock, Joe Morton and Jeff Daniels. Upon release, the film received an overwhelming response from audiences and critics and grossed $350 million worldwide.
