Shakira will make history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12 by becoming the first South American artist to win a Video Vanguard Award.. The Colombian-born superstar will be the second Latin American artist to win this prestigious award. The first was Jennifer Lopez, born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, who received the award five years ago.
In recent years, this category has been dominated by women. Shakira follows Rihanna (2016), Pink (2017), Lopez (2018), Missy Elliott (2019) and Nicki Minaj (2022). There was no winner in the 2020/21 season. The most recent male artist to receive this award was Kanye West in 2015..
Shakira will also perform at the MTV Video Music Awards for the first time in 17 years. This is a recent VMA tradition. Beginning with Justin Timberlake in 2013, the Video Vanguard award has been accompanied by an extended performance by the recipient, usually with a career-spanning mix of hits. Shakira likely to perform her 2023 hit TCG, a collaboration with Karol G, which debuted and peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in March. Karol G has already been announced as a performer on this year’s show along with Demi Lovato, Moneskin and Stray Kids.
Shakira’s most important year
It was one of the most important and eventful years for Shakira. In January, he debuted and peaked at number 9 on the Hot 100 with a collaboration with Bizarrap Bzrp Music Sessions Volume 53, making her the first female top 10 singer with a Spanish-language track. The single allowed Shakira to set 14 Guinness World Records, including the most streamed Latin song on Spotify in 24 hours and the most viewed Latin video on YouTube in 24 hours. As well as the fastest Latin song to reach 100 million views on YouTube and the most played Latin song on Spotify for the week.
And that was just the beginning of Shakira’s hot year. As already mentioned, in March he reached the position No. 1. 7th in the Hot 100 since TCG, making 2023 the first year that two of his songs reached the top ten on a genre-wide chart. In April, Shakira was named Billboard’s Hispanic Woman of the Year. In July, she became the first female artist to reach the top three positions on the Billboard Latin Pop Airplay chart in its nearly 30-year history.

Shakira wins at MTV Video Music Awards
Shakira is a four-time MTV Video Music Award nominee this year. He claims the title of “Artist of the Year”, “Best Latin American Song” and “Best Collaboration”. TCG and the best latin song for Acrostic.
The four-time VMA winner brought home her first Moonman in 2000 as an International Viewer’s Choice Award (North Latin America). He won again in this category in 2002. In 2006, he received an award for the best choreography. The hips don’t lie, featuring Wyclef Jean. The following year, he won the most shocking collaboration award—yes, it was a really competitive category—for handsome liarcollaboration with Beyoncé.
Shakira’s last VMA performance was in 2006 when she performed the aforementioned song. Hips Do not liewhich was nominated for Video of the Year and reached number one on the Hot 100. What is the Video Vanguard Award?
The Video Vanguard Award, which honors an artist for “outstanding contributions to and profound impact on music videos and popular culture,” arguably rivaled Video of the Year as the evening’s most anticipated award. The award was named after Michael Jackson in 1991, but in recent years the channel has pulled out of the association as the 2019 drama Leaving Neverland highlighted stalking allegations. In the press release announcing Shakira this year’s award winner, her name is mentioned only once in five. Other artists expected to compete for this year’s Video Vanguard Awards include Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Drake, Selena Gomez, Bruno Mars, the Jonas Brothers, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and Katy Perry.
Not Just Shakira: Nominations of the Night
Taylor Swift tops this year’s list of nominations with eight nominations, followed by SZA (six), Dodja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith (five each), and BLACKPINK, Diddy and Shakira (each four).. Shakira is the only one of these artists to be confirmed as a performer on the show, though other artists are expected to be announced later this week.
Fans can vote for their favorites in 15 gender-neutral categories at voice.mtv.com until Friday, September 1st. Voting for the best new artist will continue throughout the show. Nominations in categories recognized by public vote, including Group of the Year and Song of the Summer, will be announced at a later date. MTV has yet to announce this year’s show host or Global Icon award recipient. Last year the show was hosted by LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow. The Global Icon award went to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
