1956 – Floyd Patterson wins the world heavyweight title by knocking out Archie Moore in the fifth round in Chicago.

1969 — Russ Jackson scores a record four touchdowns, leading the Ottawa Rough Riders to a 29-11 victory over the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the CFL Gray Cup Championship Roughriders).

1979 – Sugar Ray Leonard knocks out Wilfred Benitez in the 15th round in Las Vegas to win the WBC welterweight title.

1987 – Bo Jackson, also a Kansas City Royals outfielder, rushes for 221 yards and leads the Los Angeles Raiders to a 37-14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Jackson, making his fifth NFL start, ran for 91 yards, 2 yards and a touchdown catch of 14 yards.

1990 – Boston’s Larry Bird scores his 20,000th career point as the Celtics defeat Washington 123-95 at the Garden. Bird is the fifth player in league history to score 20,000 points, 5,000 rebounds and 5,000 assists in his career (the other three are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, John Havlice Grams, Oscar Robertson and Jerry West).

1991 – San Diego State’s Marshall Faulk becomes the first national leader in rushing and scoring after rushing for 154 yards on 27 carries in a 39-12 loss to No. 1 Miami. The rebirth of a champion.

1996 – Michael Jordan becomes the 10th player in NBA history to score 25,000 points when he scores 35 points in the Bulls’ 97-88 win over San Antonio. Jordan reached 25,000 points in 782 games, faster than any other player except Wilt Chamberlain (691 games).

2003 — Mark Philippoussis wins Australia’s 28th Davis Cup title, overcoming a shoulder injury that nearly forced him to retire in the fourth set 7-5, 6- 3, 1-6, 2-6, 6 defeated Spanish player Juan Carlos Ferrero -0.

2008 — Keith Tkachuk reaches 1,000 career points when he scores late in the second period in St. Louis’ 4-2 win over Atlanta.

2008 – Oakland had just one reception by a wide receiver in a 20-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, officially Ronald Curry’s catch for 0 yards on a hook and lateral play.

2012 – NBA commissioner David Stern fines the San Antonio Spurs $250,000 for “damage to the league and our fans” for not adding Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu • Ginobili or Danny Green brought to Miami for the final game of six games.Games Games Travel

2012 – Georgetown and Tennessee were held scoreless in the final four minutes as the Hoyas defeated the Volunteers 37-36 in the SEC/Big East Challenge. The two teams combined for just seven of 20 free throw attempts. The shooting percentages were equally bad, with the Vols shooting 33% and the Hoyas shooting 36%.

2013 — Chris Davis rushes for more than 100 yards but misses a touchdown in his final game to help No. 4 Auburn beat No. 1 No. 3 34-28 University of Alabama. After freshman Adam Griffith missed a 57-yard field goal attempt, Davis caught the ball about 9 yards into the end zone. He sprinted down the left sideline, then cut back with only teammates on the clock for the Tigers’ second straight incomprehensible end.

2015 — NBA star Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers) announces his intention to retire at the end of the season.
