The Castile and León Junta’s governing council has approved a contract for the supply of 25,000 doses of intranasal influenza vaccine for the immunization of children in the community, especially those aged two to five years.
The current official calendar of vaccinations for the lifetime system in Castile and León has incorporated the novelty of influenza vaccination benefits for the child population under the age of 20 in an update for the current fiscal year 2023, the committee reported. 6 months and 59 months (up to five years).
In order to meet the seasonal influenza vaccination needs of this group, the General Directorate of Public Health has contracted the Military Government Management Council for 25,000 doses of the attenuated intranasal vaccine, with a budget of 445,454 euros.
Specifically, the intranasal vaccine will be given to children aged 24 to 59 months because nasal administration produces a better immune response for these users than parenteral vaccines, which are suitable for children aged 6 to 59 months. 23-month-old children have direct access to the main route of pathogen entry into the body; similarly, the intranasal vaccination method facilitates the use of the vaccine and is more acceptable to professionals and parents.
The Ministry of Health allocated a total of 34257.012 billion euros for the procurement of vaccines this year, an increase of 53.2% over 2022.
In addition, the Castile and León vaccination calendar has new additions for 2023, such as the shingles vaccine for people aged 65 years; the human papillomavirus for men and the pediatric influenza for children aged 6 to 59 months.
