Mercenaries 4 (WATCH TRAILER) will be released this week in the US and Italy, and on this occasion Comic had the opportunity to chat with Alan Ng, the film’s stunt coordinator, who shared some information about its making. Thanks to his passion for Hong Kong action films, Ng wanted to bring something from the latter to the new chapter of the saga with Sylvester Stallone. Here are his words:
My father was a stuntman and fought Bruce Lee. 3 Operations Dragon, so I was naturally drawn to Hong Kong action films as a child. I used to watch all the old school Hong Kong action stars like Bruce Lee in Chen’s cry also scares the West AND From China with Furorand also Jackie Chan in Police story AND Project A. I grew up idolizing them because they were real superheroes and I knew that was what I wanted to do.
Everyone on my team was amazing. We added a bit of Hong Kong flair to the fight scenes to add something different, and my team helped me achieve that. It was a real team effort.
Then, speaking about his preparatory work, he said that he didn’t just watch films. The Expendables:
We looked at all the previous Expendables films and many of the other actors’ films to see what they hadn’t done before and what style suited them best.
Among the actors we also find Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais, two stuntmen with experience in martial arts. However, being on set with two colleagues did not present any difficulties for Ng:
Iko and Tony are so experienced and talented that it was easy to work with them. Especially when creating the scenes, we were all on the same page. There was no need to talk much during the choreography because it was very natural for them. It was easy to work with them because they are very professional and talented.
No one Mercenaries 4 we find Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and Sylvester Stallone, who have already appeared in previous chapters, as well as Curtis “50” Jackson, Megan Fox (who will be the female protagonist) and Tony Jaa.
