Sarah Greenwood and Cathy Spencer, production designers behind the colorful world of Barbie, have revealed some of the backstory behind the creation of Barbie Land, built with one rule: no references to the real world.

We don’t just recreate Mattel images, we interpret the Dream House from the last seventy years. We were inspired by Kaufman’s desert house in Palm Springs, but it also had to work for our story. We met on Zoom with Greta (Gerwig) twice a week for philosophical and intellectual conversations about the nature of dolls and what it means to be a doll (…) However, there was only one fundamental rule: no black, no white and nothing real peace.
As those who have already seen the feature film will remember, black and white “enter” Barbie Land only later, thanks to Ken, who uses them as the dominant colors of his Mojo Dojo Casa, more precisely, his personal reinterpretation of Barbie Dream.
